Mo’ Marmite, Mo’ Problems
The Burton-based company Marmite have defied convention once again by creating a travel-sized jar of the paste for taking aboard flights in hand luggage.
The announcement came as a reaction to London City Airport’s report about the most confiscated food stuffs in 2014. At the top of the list came jam and marmalade, followed closely by Marmite, then golden syrup, Nutella and finally baked beans – a decent collection of classic breakfast elements.
Airline restrictions mean that passengers are unable to take any liquids over 100ml in their hand luggage, and it should instead be put in any hold luggage. Chances are that most of these violations come from people not considering things like Marmite to be liquids, but for these intents and purposes it does classify as one.
In order to circumvent the rules and allow passengers to take their favourite brown paste on board with them, Marmite have released special 70g jars which cost just £1.
Between January and March, around 300 items were collected with a total value of around £1000 – these include jars from Fortnum and Mason and Harrods as well as Marmite.
The airport doesn’t let anything go to waste though, and donates all discarded food items to Newham Foodbank in East London, which helps to feed local people in crisis.
