Gin While You Wait
From this week, travellers at Gatwick Airport can see a world first while waiting for their flights – genuine London Dry Gin being made right before their very eyes, as the world’s first airport gin distillery.
The three by four metre distillery for Nicholas Culpeper London Dry Gin is situated in the North Terminal, and gin straight from the font can be consumed in a bar named after the drink. Around 12 litres are made every day, and travellers can enjoy a single for £3.95 and a double for £5.95, with an extra £1.75 for Fever Tree tonic.
Bottle can also be bought for just £20, but as they measure in at 700ml they cannot actually be taken on flights. However, it can be bought and then picked up on the way back from holiday, for a post-vacation tipple.
This variety of London Dry Gin is particularly special. Made with lemongrass, cloves, cardamom, cassia bark and Angelica root, it has a more complex flavour than many other premium gins.
You can also try out their range of gin cocktails – one involves a double shot of the London Dry Gin, serve with tonic, a sprig of rosemary and some cassia bark for a reasonable £7.50.
Nicholas Culpeper, for whom the gin and bar are named, was an English botanist and herbalist who campaigned for healthcare to be more widely understood.
