About Edinburgh Airport
Edinburgh Airport can be found in Islington, five miles west of the city centre of Edinburgh. It was originally opened as Turnhouse Aerodrome, the most northerly base of air defence in Britain, in 1915. In 1918 it became the RAF Turnhouse, and it wasn’t until 1947 that the first commercial service flew to London.
Both the Royal Flying Corps and commercial services continued until 1997, although the Queen officially opened the airport for commercial use in 1977. The original terminal building and runway were replaced in this year by a longer runway and an additional terminal next to it, while the old terminal and runway are now used for cargo.
The airline now offers flights to 100 destinations around the world from 40 different airlines. In 2013 Edinburgh Airport saw 9.8 million passengers pass through its gates, and there were over 111,000 aircraft movements, making it the busiest airport in Scotland. In this year the terminal was also extended to meet the new Edinburgh Airport tram stop which began operations in 2014.
Edinburgh is easy to access. By car, it can be reached by the A8 Glasgow-Edinburgh road, as well as the M9 and M90. There are a number of buses which run from the city centre with express services available and as of May 2014, trams can be caught all the way to the airport.
